Integrating Bird Conservation Strategies into
Integrated Natural Resources Management Plans

For the current INRMP Handbook, visit the "Planning Tools, Handbooks, and Guidelines" page on the DENIX web site

1. Review the information on the Comprehensive State Wildlife Conservation Strategies web site. These strategies, also known as wildlife action plans, guide each state to do proactive planning for wildlife conservation. The web site contains state-by-state contact information, guiding principles, required elements of the plans, and links to each state's wildlife action plan. Establish a partnership with your appropriate state contact. The state agency approves your installation INRMP, so incorporating state action plan priorities in your INRMP will help build cooperative conservation efforts.

2. Review the Partners in Flight Bird Conservation Plan that covers your installation. To identify the physographic region in which you are located and download the PIF plan, see the map of PIF Physiographic Areas. Download the current plan for your region or state from the PIF web site, or contact your PIF Regional Working Group Chair for a hard copy. The PIF web site has species and habitat tables and maps for all regions, and will soon have all plans available for download. Support the goals and objectives promoted in this plan.

3. Compile a species prioritization list for your installation using the Partners in Flight database at the Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory. Also incorporate the list of Species of Concern for your installation.

4. Incorporate the concept of Bird Conservation Areas (BCA) into your INRMP where possible. BCAs are large areas that sustain or are capable of sustaining healthy populations of birds. They may include multiple cooperating landowners who voluntarily coordinate their management practices to provide a constant base of habitat needed by birds.

5. Coordinate bird management recommendations and activities with the following national and international bird conservation initiatives:

6. Promote and participate in International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD). Consider hosting an IMBD event at your installation, and invite the local community. Announce and register your event through the IMBD web site (click on Events Registry).

7. Implement avian monitoring programs. Following to the goals of the PIF Landbird Monitoring Strategy will facilitate incorporation of monitoring data into larger regional and national analyses. Although funding of new Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship (MAPS) stations is no longer being provided through the Legacy Resources Management Program, new MAPS stations are encouraged. MAPS provides more sophisticated data than simple point counts, but required more effort and resources. Monitoring programs are useful in providing single-season baseline population data, but are more useful if conducted annually to provide population trend data.

8. Promote Information and Education programs focusing on migratory birds. Distribute the DoD PIF brochure at meetings and conferences, and when giving talks to groups. Use the DoD PIF logo whenever appropriate.

DoD PIF Logos: 9. Check the DoD PIF web site frequently. This site will be updated with current information about DoD PIF, the bird conservation planning process, and each technical and regional working group. Submit information about activities and projects at your installation in the DoD Bird Conservation Database.
