The North American Bird Conservation Initiative

NABCI is an open process in which the effectiveness of all partners is increased while their autonomy is protected. NABCI includes:

  • Federal agencies of Canada, Mexico, and the United States

  • Networks established by Partners in Flight and the North American Waterfowl Management Plan, as well as those for shorebirds, colonial waterbirds, and Important Bird Areas

  • State/provincial agencies and many bird-oriented non-governmental organizations

  • All other committed to the conservation of birds;

Why conserve birds?

  • Bird are part of our biological heritage and perform many key ecological roles

  • Many species of birds are in serious decline and require conservation attention

  • Birds bring economic benefit through the control of pest-insect populations

  • Birds are popular: bird watching is a fast growing form of outdoor recreation, and hunting of game birds is a tradition held dear my many

  • Healthy bird populations depend on healthy ecosystems
